DIY Summer Shorts to Pants, Finished Edge

It's almost summer time and the temp is rising.

Grab a pair of your old jeans, and let's turn them into a new pair of shorts that is perfect for the upcoming heat!

I showed you how to make a pair of rolled hem shorts here.  This tutorial makes shorts that are a bit different because they have a finished edge, which I just happen to love.
It looks a bit more polished, in my opinion. : )

Ready to make your pants into jeans?
Click below to read how..

Here's what you will need:
  • A pair of jeans
  • Scissors
  • Thread that matches the current hem of your pants.
  • Pins
  • Iron
  • Sewing Machine

First things first.  Cut your jeans 3.5 inches longer than your desired length.

Turn your soon to be shorts inside out.

Next, to give your shorts a professional finish, iron the existing outer side seam (the seam that is on your outer leg) open.

Fold the raw edge of your shorts 1/4 of an inch and iron in place.

Fold the bottom edge up another 1/2 of an inch (encasing the raw edge)  and iron in place.

 Pin your hem down.

Sew the hem down. (Make sure the existing outer seam of your shorts is still ironed open.)

Turn your shorts right side out.
Fold the bottom edge of your shorts about 2 1/2  inches up. (You may want to try the shorts on and fold them where you want the edge to be).

If you want your fold to be permanent, tack the fold in place by sewing back and forth (only about 1/4 of an inch long) along the existing stitching.

Hooray! You're done.

Wasn't that easy. : )

Amber
